Harlem reaches new Heights

So after watching the disasters of this years Rip The Runway - I sat down to actually catch the tales of BET's new series Harlem Heights. Now as a Harlemite myself I was especially excited to see how they depicted our society and way of life. From the gate the style and make up were on point for all characters. Each character has a style and swag definitely seen throughout the fifty-five blocks of my beloved home land.
I also appreciated the fact that they began to season with a dedication to President Barack Obama. My main critique comes in the fact that the show is indeed overly scripted. They chose to make one "swaggerific" character in particular study the linkings of Max B and use "wavy" for every given statement that he couldn't find a replacement word for.

My favorite character so far in the series is Brook. She is very much the Harlem female with a style very eccentric. Her demeanor is very much one with pure homage paid to Harlem and she is physically captivating.

What I appreciated most about "Harlem Heights" is the way they chose to actually acknowledge Harlem vendors including, designers Montgomery, and Dancy Power Automotive, a luxury car company. I am excited about the rest of the Harlem Heights season. Tune in Mondays at 10PM, feel free to chime in on the update next week. :)

All this with time to myself.

It's Been A While, and I've Missed You

Let me take this time to my fortunate followers and say I've been away for a little while now, and I'm back with wayy too much to talk about. Not only have I still not seen "Notorious", I have yet been able to think of what designer I'll be paying special attention too, at Fashion Week next week. (That should speak millions about my work load and stress level) Ugh!

Nevermind that.

I took the time to log on to MySpace about two days ago, and noticed the largest ad on the log in page. And what caught my eye was that it read "Survive 2012", and I'm like (WHAT?). Well aparently I am not the only one who is paying attention to this 2012 end of the world fiasco. For those of you puzzeled as to what I am talking about, aparently the world is set to see dramatic change on December 12, 2012, whether it's the end of the world or not, I don't know. But websites and everything else have been giving a variety of information about what they believe, especially the one featured on this particular day on MySpace. A group called the "Institite of Human Continuity" which can be found at (www.instituteforhumancontinuity.com) has developed an acclaimed 94% of accuracy that in 2012, supposively on December 12th, "a mysterious celestial body will enter Earth's orbit in 2012 with disasterous consequences". They even give three reinactment videos that show disaster scenario's that will happen with Planet X, coming into Earth's orbit.

Other 2012 thories say that according to the Mayan calendar, December 21, 2012 the world is set to end. After speaking with one of the greatest teachers of my educational career so far, Jerry Murdock, the misunderstanding of this is that the Mayans don't specifically say that on that particular day the world is set to "end", instead the calendar will begin at 0. Entering something called The New Age of Mayanism.

This indeed A LOT to take in! Because they're is a lot of talk especially on YouTube about how the government has plans with this whole New World Order situation and all that. And while both sides present very interesting arguments, it's all a matter of time before something prevails.

I really wish someone would come out and confirm something- whether it be good or bad, because if the world is set to end in 2012, I'm not trying to sit here and pay $38,000 a year in tuition for a degree that I won't be able to use. . .you know ?

All this, with time to myself.

the fortunate followers .

For those who actually take time to read, Time To Myself, welcome to volume one, issue two. The lovely two thousand-eight was a year of revelations.

In America, there has been a new wave of trends and cycles. In the government, in the economy, in life- and when we want to venture past what the world has put us through in all of these departments, we turn to the parts of us that believe in "retail-therapy" dress in our best and go shopping! Two thousand-nine will bring us phases our fashionable sides that we have never saw before. Whether you shop at Neiman Marcus, Forever 21, or your local Soho boutique, there is sure to be something for you to become a center-piece in your fashionable atmosphere. What many fail to realize is that the revelations of style don't come from the price tag. They evolve truly through the coordination of proper mixes and matches- more match than mix.

In reviewing the Marc Jacobs SP09 Collection, there is this, sudden mix and trend of plaids, solids and sequins- and Duanecia appreciates it ! Ladies have become ladies again with knee length fifties styled skirts and ankle length dresses, high waists and hats to die for! There is a new love for belts, and an acquired taste for those oh so daring animal prints. As a personal appreciator for solids and simplicity our dear Marc, has provided us with the opportunity to explore our way through such fashionable relaxation. Until you reach the price tag!

Bloomingdales has this ever so, delicious, Posh Turnlock Big Slice Wristlet designed with love I'm sure by Marc, is tagged at a staggering 248 coins- coins of course that my tuition nor this current recession agrees with. Talk about hunger and poverty for days! But of course our friends at Forever 21 give us the more convenient ticket into pleasure with Savoy Croc Clutch available in three hot and luscious colors Rust (featured below), Fuchsia, and Red- and for how much a beautiful $16.80.

As fashion addicts we fall short on our obsessions by not exploring our options, especially us in college. Because there are too many times that we tempt to spend a whole semester borrowing a textbook so we can use the great ole dollars on a pair of shoes or handbag to travel from our residence hall to class. For 2009, lets resolute to making smarter decisions with our money-fashionable-but smarter choices.

But then there are also solutions for greater circumstances. In entrepreneurial likings of New York designers make life very very convenient. A convenience that I will feature more frequently on this blog. As a writer, model, show producer, and flat out addict- I have the opportunity to be introduced to the likings of some of the best talent that fashion has to offer. My favorite being Diva La Fashion herself Rain King of Kissed By Rain. In attending her casting call, I had the opportunity to model for Rain, and her clothes at an understatement, FAB!

In this 80's inspired hot pink dress, Rain placed me on top of the universe for the 35 seconds I spent gracing the runway at the Harlem Ink. Winter Solstice Fashion Show. Not only a runway stare down but could have easily slipped back the eye patch (part of the theme) and strutted to the club giving any single lady a run for her single George Washington! Solutions as such give you the style inhabitant, a creative, individual sense of style, and surely with designs like Rain's you won't have to worry about the girl next to you having a variation of your style that night!

With strong advice in this economy, consider the fashionable commitments you make, not only to your mirror but also to your pocket.

what we do isn't wrong .

Being born into the generation of 90's babies, I've come to the realization that we are constantly judged by our enviornment. Whether you were born into the government system, or raised in the luxuires of life. You're judged. And to be quite honest, I don't think it's fair. When you think about the past that we have been raised by. Children of our day and age, if born low to middle class like most, came from the drug era in America. Being born in New York City, I can personally vouch for the fact that my parents were teenage parents, my birth was unplanned and I turned out fine. While others haven't been granted the same advantages, no one has come to the conclusion that if you take advantage of even the smallest of resources, you'll find that the network and outcome is larger. But in that same instance, if you weren't raised to network and rely on who you know to build what you know and what you do in life- it's doesn't just come out of the clouds that that is what we're supposed to do.

This morning I woke up, and as I do every morning I rolled over and checked my cell phone. The abundance of e-mails and text messages overnight as well as Instant Messages all to my one Blackberry, makes it very evident that we have embarked on a generation of communicators. We are in love with social networking, we blog, we Instant Message, and when we just want to listen we find ourselves going on into someone elses' life and watching the daily actions and comedic lifestyles on YouTube. But why are we so sheltered by our own actions? Why don't we talk to other people instead of blasting our lives through pictures and away messages, because we feel misunderstood.

In our generation, we have been pushed into a world with technologies that our parents and grandparents never witnessed. So the constant unequal balance of communication between us and our parents is due to the fact that parents truly, "do not understand". My mother didn't grow up with AIM, or iChat, iPod, iPhone, or iTunes. So the addictions that we have built with such things, make it so unfortunate for the relationships that we've built as pop culture, in comparison to the relationships that we've built with our parents, who simply cannot relate.

Our teenage pop culture driven society is the most understood, because for the first time society is at a new level of generations principles and morals. While our parents hold things of the past important- it's not that we do not, we just have different approaches. The teaching an old dog new tricks concept has never been more apparent than it is now. We are a society of young folk that can only relate to each other. In a world, where truly, no one else understands.

We live in a fast paced world, where everything comes directly to us, so it would be unnatural for EVERYTHING not to be this way. What we do isn't wrong- it's purely misunderstood.
